Johns Street Looking up to Saint John's Church

P1240134.jpg

Little is known about this photo, we know that it was taken from the middle of John Street. The cross street in the photo is Argyle Street, now the main street. The building on the right, closer to the road, is pretty much the same. The nice wide road remains too!

When the 115ft spire of Saint Johns was erected it was the 4th tallest structure in Australia.

Glass plate negative, full plate, ‘The Church, Camden’, Kerry and Co, Sydney, Australia, c. 1884-1917

This photographic negative is one of 2900 Kerry & Co. photographs in the Powerhouse Museum's 'Tyrrell Collection' once owned by Sydney bookseller, James Tyrrell. Almost all of these negatives are 21.5 × 20.3 cm (10 × 8 inch) glass plates and many of those now held by the Powerhouse Museum collection would have been used to create postcards. In addition to the Kerry & Co. Studio images, the Tyrrell Collection at the Powerhouse Museum includes glass plate negatives published by Henry King and a number of other negatives by unattributed photographers

Below is a copy of the photo that this painting was painted from.
